» Game Review: Lambuth University vs. Lindenwood University
Lambuth University 48 Lindenwood University 65
Harking back to the Lambuth vs. Hardin-Simmons playoff shootout of 1994, today's match up saw two high scoring teams combine for 1245 yards of total offense. The Lambuth Eagles showed their tenacity and true character as they almost pulled out one of the most thrilling games in Lambuth history.
With 4:41 left in the 4th quarter, Lambuth battled back from a 28 point deficit to bring it within 3 points. Unfortunately, Lambuth's recovery of the onside kick was negated by a questionable offsides call and Lindwenwood began running the clock out. The Eagles never gave up and showed what a well-coached group of athletes they are. Unfortunately, their luck ran out as Lindenwood held on to win 65-48.
After going down 14-0 in the first quarter, Josh Garza connected with Landon Talley on a 32 yard TD at the 10:11 mark of the second quarter. This would be one of 4 touchdowns on the day for Landon who set the new single game reception record (19) at Lambuth. Both Lambuth and Lindenwood combined for 40 points in the second half as the Eagles ended the first half down 34-20. At this point, the Eagles had amassed 399 yards of total offense and Lindenwood had 243 going into half time.
Unfortunately, the Eagles once again had trouble getting going in the third quarter as Lindenwood took the opening drive 66 yards on 5 plays. On their next possession, Lindenwood would go 82 yards on 8 plays to widen the score to 48-20. It was not until the 10:53 mark of the 4th quarter that the Eagles offense got going and regained their momentum. Adam Wiese, put together a 6 play 53 yard drive that culminated in a Brandon Okechukwu receiving touchdown from 25 yards out. On Lambuth's next drive, Freshman RB BA Davis lumbered in to bring Lambuth within 10 points.
Landon Talley ended the day with 19 receptions for 248 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns. Smith also had 120 yards receiving on 8 receptions. QBs Josh Garza and Adam Wiese excelled in their roles. Garza was 22 of 38 with 3 TDs, 2 INTs and 266 yards passing. Garza was also very effective on the ground. He led the Eagles in rushing with 96 yards and was critical in several key 3rd down conversions. Adam Wiese orchestrated the 4th quarter comeback and was 18 of 33 with 3 Interceptions, 247 yards passing and 3 TDs. All three of his touchdowns came in the final 10 minutes of the game. Overall, the Eagles amassed an incredible 704 yards of total offense on 191 yards rushing and 513 total yards passing.
Lindenwood has a very talented team with some very very good receivers. They have the potential to go far in the playoffs if their can shore up their defense as their defensive backs struggled all day. This was also true of the Eagles secondary. Lindenwood leveraged their highth advantage over the Eagle DBs as they passed for 352 yards and 6 touchdowns. The Eagles defense was led by DB Rashad Taylor who had 10 total tackles (9 unassisted and 1 assist). LB Jason Ware and DB Dominique Bowman both had 7 total stops. DB Jonathan Baptist had the lone Lindenwood turnover, returning the interception for 20 yards.
In the end, turnovers killed the Eagles. Lambuth had 5 interceptions and 1 fumble. It is worth noting that the Eagles played with more discipline as they were only penalized 7 times for 45 yards. Lindenwood continued to struggle with penalties as they amassed 108 yards on 13 yellow flags.
With this loss the Eagles end the year 8-4 and tri-champions of the Midsouth Conference West. For a team that was coming off of a 3-8 season and picked 5th in the conference, the Eagles returned to the postseason for the first time since 2003 and were definitely the surprise team of the NAIA. Coach Freeze and the graduating Eagles have created a foundation for future success and should be very proud of their accomplishments. Thanks to all of the fans, parents and coaches who've made this such a special season.
